Applications are invited for positions as James Martin Research Fellows in the new Centre for Tropical Forests at Oxford University. The fellows will be based in the Environmental Change Institute and the James Martin 21st Century School. We are seeking candidates with expertise in the fields of understanding and managing the drivers of tropical deforestation.

One fellowship will focus on the local and regional drivers of deforestation, based on in-depth knowledge of specific tropical forest frontiers, and bringing in knowledge of political, social and economic drivers. The aim will be to explore the local and regional challenges to controlling rates of deforestation.

The other fellowship will focus on global tropical forest policy, particularly in the context of global climate change policy and emerging systems of carbon and ecosystem payments. The aim would be to explore the shifting global opportunities and challenges in exploiting the role of tropical forest protection as a tool for mitigation of climate change. We are especially interested in applicants who can contribute economic or integrated assessment skills, who are able to deliver high quality analytical and written work, and who have detailed knowledge of climate and forest policy issues within the international policy framework.

The appointment will be for up to 3 years starting in January 2009.

In addition to these full time appointments we also welcome enquiries about *short term and sabbatical visits under the James Martin 21st Century School Tropical Forest initiative*. More information about the visitor programme can be found at
