Researcher for the Freshwater Project |

2. Outline of research contents |
Under the project theme “Enhancing Access to Safe Water through Innovative Water Quality Management,” this research project aims to propose innovative policies on water quality management in terms of increasing the usability of water resources and improving access to safe water. The project consists of the three research activities as follows.
|
(1) |
“Groundwater Quality Management for Increasing Available Safe Water Sources”, which aims to propose an innovative groundwater quality management framework and also reasonable water resource management considering appropriate water quality commensurate with the quality required by different beneficial uses. The core activities of this research are case studies on groundwater management in Asian cities and comparative studies. |

(2) |
“Strategic Water Quality Management for Urban Areas”, which aims to propose a policy framework that will promote innovative water quality management for urbanised areas. China is the target country of this study. |
|
(3) |
“Water Environment Partnership in Asia (WEPA)”, a programme initiated by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment. In this component, enhancement of the WEPA database on conservation of water environment policy will be carried out. Development of human networks and promotion of the awareness and capacity of relevant stakeholders (governments, commercial and industrial sector, and local people) to cope with the deterioration of water quality are also aims of the programme. |

3. Content of Work |
|
Researcher will pursue their research in all the areas of 1), 2) and 3) above under the guidance and supervision of the Senior Policy Researcher and other higher ranking employees. |
|
|
4. Qualifications and Competencies |
|
(1) |
Applicants should have extensive knowledge of sustainable development in Asia as well as knowledge of water quality management policy in developed countries and in Asian developing countries. |
|
(2) |
Applicants should have a master’s degree or hold an equal qualification, as well as having research achievements to show in the area of point (1) above, and be strongly motivated to conduct strategic research. |
|
(3) |
Applicants should have at least five years work or research experience at research institutes, private businesses, universities, think-tanks, government, or international organisations. |
|
(4) |
Applicants should be fluent enough in English to write documents and express themselves precisely in conference discussions. |
|
|
|
5. Term |
|
The term of employment shall be from October 2007 to March 2010 with a six-month probationary period. Renewal of the term of employment is possible, depending on the achievements in the above mentioned term and on the research plan of the next phase of IGES strategic research starting from April 2010, referring to the performance evaluation to be made at the end of the current term. |
|

Salary is determined by IGES remuneration regulations, taking into consideration the employee’s research career, research achievements, occupational history, expertise and experience. |
