ASEAN in Today’s World (AsTW)

is a 2-week international program focusing on ASEAN and East Asia, designed for university students from around the world. The medium of instruction is English. AsTW was launched in March 2009 and has been co-organized by Kyushu University (Japan) and Mahidol University (Thailand). After successfully hosting three sessions at Mahidol University, AsTW moves to Ateneo de Manila University (the Philippines) in 2012. Having new partners of Ateneo de Manila University and Fukuoka Women’s University, four of most prestigious universities in Asia have collaborated in the AsTW program with the strong support from the ASEAN Secretariat.

The 2012 session will convene
from February 23, 2012 to March 9, 2012
at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines

Application deadline: November 15, 2011.

Structure of AsTW

AsTW consists of three parts: ASEAN Studies Courses (ASC), Asian Languages & Cultures (ALC) and Field Trips, providing students with a unique study opportunity. ?

ASC gives AsTW a distinction as a comprehensive academic program of ASEAN issues that increasingly play an important role in the world and “ASEAN+3” relations.

Students will broaden their knowledge and gain deeper understanding about ASEAN and “ASEAN+3” cooperation through ASC taught by professors from Kyushu University (Japan), Ateneo de Manila University (Philippines), and Mahidol University (Thailand). A valuable part of the program is the opportunity to approach ASEAN and East Asia topics from different perspectives. Students will select one ASC course from among those offered.

In addition, students will choose one intensive Asian language course. The combination of ASC and ALC contributes to the students’ synthetic understanding of ASEAN and East Asia.

A series of Philippine cultural field trips is another attractive part of the program. Each excursion is designed to allow students to experience Filipino culture and aesthetic sense.

To complete AsTW, students must take 2 courses (one ALC and one ASC). Students who complete AsTW will be awarded a certificate jointly signed by the Presidents of Kyushu University and Ateneo de Manila University.
