Position title: Biodiversity Conservation Expert

Report to: National Project Manager

Location: Based in Kon Tum with frequent travel to project site in Kon Plong District

Duration of Contract: Two years

Probation: Three months

Background

As part of efforts to support the country’s commitment to mitigate climate change, improve livelihoods and conserve forest and biodiversity, FFI is implementing EU funded programme entitled “Developing community carbon pools for Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, plus enhancing forest carbon stocks (REDD+) projects in selected ASEAN countries”.

In Vietnam, the Community Carbon Pool Project is located in Kon Plong District, Kon Tum Province.

Main Duties

Under the supervision of National Project Manager, Biodiversity Conservation Expert will:

Technical advice

1) Lead participatory biodiversity assessments through literature review, interview surveys and field based survey work.

2) Provide assistance in the development and implementation of biodiversity monitoring and threat mitigation systems.

3) Implement a field assessment of High Conservation Value Forests (HCVF) for the project site in collaboration with local stakeholders.

4) Develop community-based patrol groups collaboratively with local communities.

5) Perform the duties and functions of a Team Leader during biological surveys and forest resource assessments.

6) Raise awareness among communities and local government officials about project activities in regards to biodiversity assessments, protection and related safeguards.

7) Engage provincial/district governments of the project area to integrate HCVF into spatial planning for landscape-level HCVF protection.

8) Lead the development of work plans, identify and secure logistical requirements of the project for biodiversity related work.

9) Provide technical assistance in policy development relevant to biodiversity conservation under the national REDD+ framework.

10) Contribute to reports and communication material in regards to biodiversity surveys, HVCF assessments and development of project documentation for validation under CCBA standards.

11) Actively liaise with project personnel, including consultants/experts, on matters pertaining to the implementation of the project interventions.

12) Represents FFI, as authorized by the Country Director/Programme Managers, in relevant fora on REDD+ and community forestry.

Others

1) Supervision, monitoring, and reporting on the project.

2) Build and maintain good relationships with partners in the implementation of project activities.

3) Ensure good financial and administrative management of field work.

4) Other tasks as required by supervisors.

Requirements

1) Hold a degree of Bachelor or equivalent training or experience in conservation, biology, forestry or a related discipline. Postgraduate degree preferred.

2) At least 03 years work experience in biological inventory, biodiversity assessment and conservation planning.

3) Demonstrated experience with capacity development including training, coaching and mentoring others.

4) Understanding of and experience with working with local communities and local government.

5) In-depth knowledge and experience in community-based biodiversity conservation.

6) Working knowledge of REDD+ and preferably HCVF assessments.

7) Experience in conservation related law enforcement techniques preferred.

8) Excellent writing and communication skills in Vietnamese and English.
